University of Michigan students Micaela McCabe (upper left) and Kaitlin Ma are building a small demonstration size water filter together with elementary school students in Brazil. The U-M based student organization Pantanal Partnership conducts a series of basic engineering and water sanitation workshops at the schools in the towns of Congas and Chumbo, on the edge of Pantanal, the largest wetlands in the word. University of Michigan students teach pupils from Pantanal area schools the importance of clean drinking water and together they build sand-based water filters. The UM students hope that the kids will educate their parents about the water issues and that ultimately better water sanitation will help alleviate a number of serious diseases that plague the area.
